Roy

I enjoy mathematics, and I would be delighted if I could support the vision of the King's Maths School by performing the role of parent governor.

My own background is white middle class. I attended a good comprehensive school in Sheffield with plenty of opportunity to develop my own mathematical education and was very fortunate to study mathematics at the University of Oxford.

By profession, I am an Actuary with experience across insurance, pensions, and investments. Currently I work for Lloyd’s of London in the Financial Risk team. Prior to Lloyd’s I was a Senior Consultant at Towers Watson, and then Group Financial Risk manager at RSA insurance company. Often, I help management and board level committees take and oversee decisions around risk management, decisions which can have implications for the whole organisation.

My belief is that the UK needs more, not less diversity of institutions that educate young people (for example I am comfortable with a mix of state and private schools). Within a diversified and competitive education system, there is a role for schools that are centres of excellence in specialist areas (like KCLMS). But to thrive in future, KCLMS needs to provide both an outstanding education for its own students and demonstrate an impact on the wider community through a variety of outreach activities.

I believe I could provide an independent perspective to the governing body of KCLMS and contribute to the work of either the Investment Committee, or the Finance and General Purposes Committee.
