In your own words, what is King’s Maths School?

King’s Maths School is a place where anyone with any sort of interest in maths can feel like they fit in. Everybody here is so focused on learning, so you feel motivated to really explore your subject, which is great!

What is exciting about King’s Maths School?

In my experience, students in other schools may downplay their passion of their subject because others may make fun of them. This has a negative effect on their learning. At our school, you are encouraged to be passionate, because everybody around you loves their subjects too! This means you learn more, and are pushed more, that you would otherwise be.

What is your favourite subject to study? Why?

I find statistics and mechanics particularly interesting. I’ve always liked numbers, and I want to go into engineering in the future, so these topics are important for me to study.

What have the problem solving sessions been like?

They are really interesting as they are a complete contrast to the other lessons we have. Every week we are given a new problem sheet, which focus on different topics to develop our skills as mathematicians. We experience a different teaching style in these sessions, which is very valuable. Our mentors may provide hints to push us in the right direction, but ultimately we are left to work out the problem independently.

Tell me about the sports / exercise you have done at King’s Maths School?

I tried out Yoga last year, after a group of students began running a Yoga club. It’s important to continue with sport and exercise as it is another activity that will make you a well-rounded individual. I personally feel it’s important to have a variety of different focuses, and this is an opportunity to spend your time in a different way.

Has the school been helpful to you in the UCAS process?

The school has been incredibly helpful. We have had all sorts of different people come into the school to lead presentations and assemblies. I think we’ve been given more than enough information to get us where we want to go, but if you need any help, you can talk to pretty much anyone.

What subject do you want to study at university?

I am looking at the Mechanical Engineering course at the University of Cambridge. I like the way the course is taught, and how I will be able to begin specialising in a certain field once I have received basic knowledge of a variety of disciplines.

What career do you want to go into?

I’m not entirely sure. I have some engineering experience, through competitions, and I like the design aspect of it. There are so many opportunities, and there is so much research to do beforehand!
