King’s Maths School Announces Appointment of New Head

Following a rigorous recruitment process, King’s Maths School is delighted to announce the appointment of Timothy Bateup as Head Teacher of King’s Maths School from September 2023.

Mr Bateup is currently Head of Mathematics at City of London School for Girls, which he joined in 2015. He attained a 1st Class BSc in Mathematics and a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics at the University of Warwick.

On receiving the news of his appointment, Mr Bateup said, “I am incredibly excited and honoured to be appointed as the next Head of King’s Maths School. What has stood out for me has been the overriding commitment to the individual and the supportive atmosphere. The warmth of welcome, underpinned by a deep-rooted culture of care and drive for academic excellence, resonate with my own values. I look forward to getting to know the students, staff, parents and carers in the months ahead.”

Bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience, Mr Bateup has been in teacher leadership for over a decade. Prior to joining City of London School for Girls, he taught at Highgate School in North London. He led its mathematics outreach programme, working with primary and secondary state schools across multiple boroughs to enrich students’ mathematical experiences.

Passionate about widening participation in maths, he launched a new partnership project with schools in East and Central London whilst at City of London School for Girls. The programme included peer mentoring, leadership training and support for teachers and activities to improve the uptake of A level Further Maths in those schools.

David Benello, Chair of the Governing Body, said, “I am delighted that Mr Bateup is joining King’s Maths School. He has an excellent academic record and is respected both as a great teacher and a trusted leader. The interview panel was immensely impressed by Mr Bateup’s depth of knowledge and understanding of education and how his values and vision for the future echo those of King’s Maths School.”

Mr Bateup will work closely with Head Teacher Dan Abramson OBE, who has been in the role for ten years, to ensure a smooth handover and transition over the coming months. King’s Maths School will provide students, parents and carers with an opportunity to meet Mr Bateup in due course.

Mr Benello said, “On behalf of the entire King’s Maths School community, I would like to warmly welcome Mr Bateup to KCLMS. We know he will bring his significant and unique knowledge, skills, and experience to benefit our students, staff and school community. We are thrilled to have him on board.”
