Former KCLMS Head Teacher Awarded OBE

Timothy Bateup

It is our honour to announce that the Head Teacher of King’s College London Mathematics School (KCLMS) has been awarded an OBE for services to Education in the New Year Honours List 2023.

Dan Abramson, who has been in the role for ten years, has helped propel the school to be the most successful state sixth form in the UK. Before joining as its inaugural Head, Mr Abramson was Head of Mathematics and Head of Outreach at Highgate school where he helped to establish its pioneering outreach program for teaching talented students in local state schools.

Mr Abramson today said, “I am truly humbled and proud. This award recognises the incredible support of so many brilliant people who have helped make King’s Maths School what it is today. My work would not be possible without our incredibly dedicated team, from teachers and governors to support staff, and everyone else who plays an integral role to the phenomenal provision our school offers students."

In addition to helping KCLMS students attain the best A-level results in the UK year after year, Mr Abramson has led the school to securing the Best State Sixth Form School of the Decade award in The Sunday Times School’s Guide in 2021.

Mr Abramson is a trustee of Mathematics Education for Social Mobility and Excellence (MESME), a registered charity leading MESME Maths Circles, a new and exciting nationwide enrichment programme for high-attaining secondary school students. He earned a first-class degree in Mathematics from Cambridge University as well as a Certificate of Advanced Study in Mathematics.

King's College London announced in December 2012 that it was establishing a specialist sixth form for talented young mathematicians as part of the Government's plans to improve mathematics education in the state sector and to increase the number of mathematically talented young people with the right levels of attainment to study STEM subjects at top universities.

Professor the Baroness Alison Wolf, Founding Chair of Governors, said, “King's Maths School has more than fulfilled its founders' greatest hopes for its success, and done so year after year. This is in huge part the result of Dan Abramson's inspired leadership and we are absolutely delighted that his achievements have been recognised.”
