Dan Abramson to leave King’s Maths School after 10 years

The Executive Head Teacher of KCLMS, Dan Abramson, will leave the school at the end of the academic year following ten years in the role. The governors have instigated the search for a new Head Teacher for September 2023 and the school will share news about the successor in due course.

Mr Abramson said: “After ten exhilarating years at King’s Maths School, I have decided to step down from August 2023 to explore new opportunities. I feel immensely proud of what we have achieved at the school – it has been a huge team effort. We call ourselves the KCLMS family and that’s exactly what we are.”

He added: “It has been an incredible privilege to lead such a vibrant organisation, the first-established university-sponsored mathematics school in the UK, with such enthusiastic and talented students, driven by caring, dedicated staff and governors.”

King’s Maths School recently celebrated its best-ever A Level results: 86.5% of grades were A* and 99.6% were A*/A. The proportion of high grades represented a huge jump since the last public exam results of 2019 and was the highest of any school reported by The Times. A record proportion of 34% leavers from the Class of 2022 have gone to Oxbridge. Warwick, Bristol and King’s College London were also popular destinations, taking a further 33% between them.

David Benello, Chair of the Governing Body, said: “The governors fully understand and support Dan’s decision. Over a decade, Dan has led the development of the school from an idea to a top performing beacon for the growing network of maths schools, obtaining exceptional results by recruiting and developing a cadre of outstanding staff members, and by inspiring generations of students.”

Mr Benello continued: “I would like to pay tribute to Dan’s dedication, inspiration, and leadership during his 10 years here. We thank him for his exceptional service and for his relentless pursuit of excellence. His passion for raising standards of teaching and learning and promoting improvements in attainment is to be recognised and celebrated. We look forward to continuing working with Dan over the next academic year. We will ensure that he can remain proud of the school.”

The Head Teacher post has become available at a particularly exciting time in the school’s development as KCLMS plans for significant expansion in the next few years. The new Head will therefore lead on this ambitious change and will have a considerable impact on the school’s future direction and curriculum.

Mr Abramson said: “I would like to give my sincere thanks to the entire school community for what we have together achieved – our hard-working staff, our talented students, our supportive parents and carers and our incredible governors. I would also like to pay tribute to our phenomenal university partner, King’s College London, and our corporate partners, XTX Markets and Man Group, who have given so generously of their time, resources and energy to supporting us. Schools can only be successful when everyone is pulling in the same direction.”

He concluded: “I look forward to watching KCLMS excel and thrive, and I know that the school will continue to make memories for generations to come. I also very much look forward to working and collaborating with our entire school community over the next 12 months.”
